AYA Eyewear introduces Mikayla the latest style designed in collaboration with renowned Indigenous artist Phil Gray from the Humpback Whale Collection. This noteworthy collection celebrates the extraordinary return of humpback whales to the Pacific Northwest, while also supporting UNYA, (Urban Native Youth Association) a Vancouver-based non-profit that is the centre of Indigenous youth excellence, supporting youth on their journeys by amplifying and celebrating their voices.
Mikayla, is a fresh take on feminine sophistication, and available in striking teal with shiny light gold or bold burgundy with frost rose gold. This oversized lightweight metal frame features intricate enamel detailing and a stunning humpback whale design by artist Phil Gray. Available in two sizes, Mikayla has spring hinges for comfort, adjustable rocking nose pads, and longer temples give it all-day wearability. It’s contemporary take on a very retro vibe that offers an elevated look with a modern silhouette.
Phil Gray is a master Tsimshian artist hailing from British Columbia. Phil’s work draws from the rich traditions of the Tsimshian people, blending classic Indigenous themes with a modern aesthetic. His deep understanding of formline design, paired with his innovative approach, has earned him recognition both locally and internationally.
Gray’s contributions to Indigenous art go beyond his craft. His pieces are a celebration of cultural heritage, embodying the stories, symbols, and spirituality of the Tsimshian Nation. From public art installations to personal commissions, Gray’s work continues to inspire and educate, reflecting the strength and resilience of Indigenous peoples.
Once again in collaboration with AYA Eyewear, Phil brings his cultural vision to the Humpback Whale Collection, where the resurgence of the humpback whale is celebrated. The return of balance and harmony in the natural world is significant for Indigenous people, as whales hold profound cultural and spiritual significance for them. Gray’s artistic influence is deeply felt throughout the collection, as each piece is imbued with cultural significance and respect for traditional forms of storytelling through art.
Giving Back to the Community
Staying true to its core values, AYA Eyewear continues its tradition of giving back to the communities it celebrates. A portion of the proceeds from this collection will go to the Urban Native Youth Association (UNYA), supporting Indigenous youth through various programs. To date, AYA has contributed over $300,000 in community initiatives, including providing eyewear to elders in need, scholarships for Indigenous women, and supporting at-risk children with healthy breakfast programs in Northern communities.
About AYA Optical
AYA Optical was founded in 2009 with a vision to create eyewear that would be a canvas to tell stories from the world and feature original artwork created by renowned First Nations artists, such as Corrine Hunt, Donald Chretien, Phil Gray and Kathy Marianito. While the relationship with those artists continues to flourish, AYA has many other new collaborations simultaneously in progress.
AYA Optical successfully blends for-profit entrepreneurship with philanthropy. The brand has always invested back into indigenous communities and has contributed over $300,000 to initiatives such as helping at-risk kids in Northern communities start their day with a healthy breakfast, scholarship programs for indigenous women and eyewear donations to elders and communities in need. The brand is known for its great styling, focus on details, quality craftsmanship, and philanthropic efforts.
AYA Optical has built a reputation for producing exceptional eyewear crafted from high-quality acetates and metals. This woman-led eyewear brand continues to push boundaries with creative eyewear design, and this series is the first of its kind integrating ledger art, as it pairs Jim’s extraordinary artwork with handmade acetates inspired by buffalo horn materials, creating eyewear that is both beautiful and deeply meaningful.
