ECPs Share How they Use the WCO Alcon Dry Eye Wheel in New Video

The World Council of Optometry (WCO) and Alcon have released anew video that offers new perspective on their jointly-developed Dry Eye Wheel, a practical tool that helps with the diagnosis and treatment of dry eye disease. Five eye care professionals (ECPs) from Latin America, the Middle East, and North America explain how they use the web-based instrument when training colleagues or explaining the nuances of dry eye disease and treatment to their patients.

Featured ECPs include Silvia Marcela Escobar Duran, OD, PhD, FAAO, from Colombia; Charbel Faraj, M. Optom, DBA, from Qatar; Sal Jivraj, OD, MBA, FAAO, from Canada; Aamer Ejaz Khan Niaz, OD, M.Optom, from Pakistan; and Asad Ullah, OD, M.Optom, FAAO, from Pakistan.

The Dry Eye Wheel was created in consultation with educators Professors Jennifer Craig, Lyndon Jones, and James Wolffsohn, and is designed for ECPs to easily reference the three pillars of mitigation, measurement, and management. It is available for free on the WCO website at https://dryeye.worldcouncilofoptometry.info/interactive-dry-eye-wheel It has also been translated into several languages including Spanish, French, and Chinese to improve and expand accessibility.

“This disease is a global epidemic. Having tools like the Dry Eye Wheel widely available and used in countries around the world is making a huge difference for both ECPs and the patients they treat,” said Cindy Tromans, BSc (Hons), PhD, FEAOO, president of the World Council of Optometry.

Dry eye disease can be a chronic, painful condition with about 1.4 billion people affected worldwide.1 Reports of increased occurrences align with notable factors such as increasing use of technology, environmental triggers, and an aging population.2  WCO and Alcon initially partnered to develop the dry eye disease education initiative to raise optometrists’ understanding of dry eye and deliver resources on practical management.

New educational resources are continuously being integrated with the Dry Eye Wheel and its website. To use the wheel and discover other dry eye disease resources, visit: https://dryeye.worldcouncilofoptometry.info/interactive-dry-eye-wheel.
