Silhouette does it again! The high profile, independent red dot Jury only issued awards to designs capable of garnering enthusiasm through their functionality, ergonomics, self-evident quality, and innovativeness. There were even two Silhouette models honoured with the coveted “red dot award: product design 2014” for outstanding design quality: the Futura Anniversary Collection and Titan New Wave.

40 design professionals from 25 nations came together this year to constitute the largest jury in the award’s history. The group included USB drive inventor Hideshi Hamaguchi, architectural expert Ben van Berkel, and one of the luminaries of interior design, Prof. Stefan Diez. The experts had three days to form an opinion, which was no easy task. After all, this year saw a record 4,815 submissions (!) from 53 nations – yet another superlative in this competition’s history.

In light of this exclusive field of contestants, only the best were able to make their way through the stiff competition. The jury rewarded well thought-out innovative product design, aesthetic quality, and trend-setting design. There were two Silhouette submissions that met these high standards according to the stringent jury. One was the Futura line, which the company is using to celebrate its 50th anniversary and to set new sunglasses standards in the fashion world. Then there is the minimalist eyewear model Titan New Wave.

Fashion critic and style icon Diane Pernet ennobled Futura by calling it “the sunglasses of the future.” Silhouette could not be prouder to be a “red point” recipient. It has been awarded to designer Gerhard Fuchs’ newly interpreted model (its presentation triggered a revolution upon presentation for the time in 1974) as a top design in high-tech quality. In the design language of the current Silhouette rimless philosophy: flexible coolness with a contemporary look, featuring unmatched comfort and maximum lightness thanks to the special material technology (SPX+).

The Titan New Wave particularly won over the jury with a technical innovation Silhouette developed: cutting edge technology. A precisely positioned nylon thread enables invisible, minimalistic anchoring of lenses on the upper bar. In combination with the upper bar, it facilitates an extremely reduced, light, and flexible model.
