The latest eyewear collection by John Varvatos welcomes Ringo Starr as its celebrity face. Combing style with support for the Ringo Starr Peace and Love Fund, this collection is the perfect way to fashionably support a worthwhile cause. We interview REM Artistic Director Nico Rosesillier who shares the style and inspiration behind the collection.
1. Tell us about piece Ringo Starr is wearing.
Ringo Starr is wearing the John Varvatos V793 sun style in Gunmetal in the new John Varvatos Fall 2014 campaign images. They’re Ringo Starr’s personal frames – that include his optical prescription – which he wears regularly.
The V793 style is from the John Varvatos Artisan Collection. The lightweight rimless- frame features a three piece mounted design, in addition to a filigree pattern detailing on the temple and bridge – creating a subtle, effortless style. The style is available in Brown, Gunmetal, and Gold mirrored lenses – for those searching for a little more rock and roll.
2. What do you think made Ringo Starr the right choice for John Varvatos’ fall
The John Varvatos brand is rooted in, and inspired by rock ‘n’ roll. The creative spirit, electricity and edginess intrinsic in the personal style of rock ‘n’ roll icons such as Ringo Starr inspire John and influence the evolution of
his eclectic sensibility. Ringo was also a fan and customer of the John Varvatos brand, so the partnership was a natural fit.
3. Where did the design inspiration come from for this collection?
The John Varvatos Artisan Collection is one of four eyewear collections for the brand which include, the Bowery Collection, the Classic Collection, and the newly launched Soho Collection. The Soho Collection is inspired by John Varvatos’ first store opening in New York City’s Soho neighborhood, and features eight new styles, four optical, three sun (with polarized lenses, a first for the brand!) and one reader- style – each offered in three rich colours. The Soho Collection has an elevated level of timeless, polished and tailored design.
4. Who have been some of your favourite music artists to work with in the past?
All of the musicians John has worked with for his advertising campaigns have been great at supporting the brand and our various eyewear collections, so it’s hard to choose favorites. How- ever, meeting and working with Ringo Starr was definitely a dream come true as a Beatles fan!
5. As music changes, how do you see the direction of eyewear changing with it?
The John Varvatos brand is rooted in rock ‘n’ roll, and the designs often draw inspiration from the past, repurposing the ideas into something entire- ly new. The resulting collections reflect the quality and attention-to-detail inherent in old world tailoring, while creating luxurious, comfortable product for a modern lifestyle. My eyewear designs will continue to mirror this inspiration, vision and direction that John has for the brand.
6. Fashion is always changing, but what never goes out of style?
I believe that fashion is a continuity of revert- ing the past into the present – what goes around comes around, and most styles or trends come full circle. The challenge is being consistent and true to your brand’s essence.
7. Which musician from the past do you wish you had the chance to work with on a collection?
One of my favorite musicians of all time is Jimi Hendrix. I would have loved work with him on an eyewear collection.
8. What music is playing while you are working?
I’ve been listening to The Doors lately, and music from The Rolling Stones’ is always in rotation!
9. What accessory can you not live without?
My phone! I use my phone to snap photos of things I’m inspired by, whether it’s art, architecture or my family.
10. This collection includes a partnership with The Ringo Starr Peace and Love Fund, why was this an important component of the collection?
Both John Varvatos and Ringo Starr are well- known for their remarkable charitable efforts, so I believe the campaign presented a great opportu- nity for them to support a cause such as The Ringo Starr Peace and Love Fund.
11. What can eyewear enthusiasts expect to see from John Varvatos Eyewear as we enter 2015?
Next year, people can expect John Varvatos Eyewear to have smaller, more refined shapes, and even more old school rock ‘n’ roll inspiration.
